JustBananas's Journal, 08 Jun 21

Have been eating very simply lately: 2-3 bowls of cherries for breakfast, a banana or 2 for lunch, and dinner is just a big bowl of beans (pinto, white, or black from dried) made with olive oil and various spices topped with fresh herbs from the garden. Have not felt motivated this week to be adventurous in the kitchen, possibly due to the new workout routine (Barre). Am actually waking up hungry due to the increased exercise.

Hair is mostly and finally long enough to pull into a high ponytail without aid of a barrette. It still looks wild and unruly down, but at least I have another alternative to ball caps for public outings. (Side Note: Short hair is incredibly high-maintenance. Every morning I wake up looking like a bomb detonated. Also cannot get away with drip-dry & go styling. I will never, ever ever cut my hair short again, no matter how damaged it is.)

I started sleeping with a satin lined cap (curly/wild/wavy hair) and it is the best thing ever. my husband has curls a little shorter than your hair and he uses one too. Both of us have way less mess to tame in the morning and way less breakage and split ends over the last year. Totally worth it. Mine is a grace elaye(sp?) and his is just a simple SLAP with an regular elastic band.

@Bdixon: I have a couple of silk caps for when I deep condition my hair overnight. I'll give it a try tonight - thanks!

I totally agree, short hair is a pain!

@EAM: beans have plenty of protein, and Barre Method uses resistance training (which prevents osteoporosis). Your profile is private, so I'm going to assume you're new to nutrition and exercise management.

@Letty: show me a picture of you with short hair, Grrll! I've only ever seen you with long, gray & purple 💜 @Mermee: I've been vegan/vegetarian since I was 16, and met with a registered dietician when I was 18 to get educated. My doctor is actually same height but thinner than me! But yeah, doc laid out her expectations for me and goals for my next visit, including exercise, BMI/weight, vitamins needed, and lipid levels for my next lab. I'm not worried about the eamfit comments -- I suspect she has never met a vegetarian before, and was told to do Atkins or something meaty.

You’re eating well, 🍌

@Moops: 💗 cherry season! @Mermee: vegans are a dime a dozen out here in California. They're slender and healthy and active -- way more so than burger & burrito set. I don't tell anyone to not eat meat, but I am big on whole foods (so buy the meat raw and grill it at home) and very anti-processed food. My solution for everything is to add raw fruits and veggies 🍒🥑🥕

JB, I get it. I go through what one may call cycles, where I just want to eat certain foods or only raw foods. Certainly your WOE is working for you. 👍👏❤

@Becky: that's the trick, isn't it? Find a WOE that keeps you at a healthy weight and doesn't cause heart disease, diabetes, or cancer, etc. I was raised by parents who fed me with produce from their garden and fruit trees, so salads and fruits have always been staples. We didn't go to fast food places, and rarely had junk food in the pantry. Wasn't in their budget, and my mom loved cooking. I didn't get fat until just a couple of years ago, when I veered waaaaaayyyy off my normal routine of diet/exercise.

@Mermee: Pure Food & Wine? The maritini made of sake instead of tea? Yeah, heard about that one, featured in Vanity Fair. Restaurants out here all have vegetarian options. Farmers Markets are open daily year round, too. Wish these things caught on around the country as normal.

JB, your current food plan sounds terrific. Do you pressure cook your beans? I make a pot of one variety or other every week and flavor them either, Italian (garlic, oregano, basil), Tex-Mex, (garlic, chili powder, cumin), or Indian (garam masala). All versions get bay leaves, celery stump, and red pepper flake in the pot.

My mother was beautiful all the way to the end. She had long hair and styled it up flowing down in the back. She always said a woman shouldn’t cut her hair while she’s young for your young for a short while and have your older years to have it short. She was French and blonde. Plus, ALWAYS skinny and ate like a football player. Sometimes she had spaghetti with brownies and ice cream with nuts for breakfast. I DID NOT TAKE AFTER HER!🥲 I hope your hair grows to length you want it soon JustBananas. 👍🌸🌺🌼

@Gastropod: After overnight soaking, I boil up a fresh pot in the morning. White beans with rosemary, garlic and onion. Sometimes done with lemon, garlic & chili. Pintos with tomato salsa. Sometimes with just olive oil, cumin, onion & cilantro. Black beans with oregano, tomatoes, and cayenne. Garbanzos with Indian curry spices and cilantro. Everything gets cooked in a leek-based broth that I make from leftover leek greens. It's all pretty filling so half the time I just skip rice.

@Shrewd: Your mom sounds like a movie star! I would never have cut my hair had we not had quarantine. I figured it would grow out and none of my co-workers would have a clue (like wearing sweatpants during Zoom meetings). Office opens back up in a couple of months, though, so we'll see. Am more hoping I'll be at my weight goal by then so I can fit back into all my clothes! 👗

I just want to mention that there are a lot of physicians and nurses on this site that are so interesting! My friend was head of a hospital and your doctor is also your friend JustBananas. I would never want to be a patient of someone sarcastic like that. Caring for patients is just that caring in kindness and sincere honest heartfelt concern for others!! Thank goodness JustBananas we have the best docs!

That's great you're feeling more comfortable with your hair!

I'd like to see you eating a little more than that but as long as you're happy and healthy. How long is your hair now compared to your profile pic? If you can handle the heat then long hair is the way to go. Looks great and gives you more options.

My profile pic was taken prior to my "punishment" haircut, where all that blondish hair you see was hacked off. So if you check out my past posts, I have a recent Before/After set of photos, and my hair is about 1/2 longer than those. Long hair is the plan, and it's much easier than short hair because it takes seconds to put it up in a bun, topknot, or ponytail.
