I decided to partake in what is often called a “Carb Reload”. This is a period of time where someone on a Ketogenic diet allows themselves an increase in carb intake. Some do so significantly, others maybe just a small increase. Either way, normally, a carb reload is only for a day or two at most, then it should be back to Keto limits and continued weight loss. My experience was not good. Not good at all.

When I awoke that morning, I thought to myself – I want bread, pasta, pizza; anything with carbs. I was excited and ready to chow down on something – anything carby :) Surprisingly, I actually did not go overboard too terribly much. My “taste” for foods has changed – a lot it seemed. Most of what I ate didn’t even taste all that great. And the expected boon turned out to be more of a bust. I gained back 5 lbs – which while expected, did kind of suck.

Believe it or not, the weight regain isn’t the bad part. What turned out to be an unexpected negative to this carb reload idea – at least for myself, was the immediate return of hunger pangs throughout the day.

When I first started my Keto diet, I went through some pretty severe hunger pangs and withdrawals symptoms. For me – I was fortunate enough that they only lasted a few days and my “keto Flu” was pretty short lived. After getting adjusted to my severely different menu choices, I actually did well and felt satiated pretty much all the time. The idea to eat when hungry and stop when full – seemed to work well. But now – that is not the case. I’ve not had Keto flu or headaches, but I am hungry all the time.

For the past week, I stayed within my Keto limits for the most part, though there was a few days where I had more carbs than I would have liked. It is the amount of food that I ate that is disappointing. Being hungry is NOT good for any dieter. And my Keto diet has always addressed that for me very well. But it has been a full week now, it is early morning – and I am VERY hungry. I am not usually so in the mornings at all.

It is important that I address this immediately. While I gained 5 lbs over that 2 day reload, I’ve also gained more since. And I’ve lost some since as well. Today, I am 186.2 lbs. I first hit that mark on Day 85 – a full two weeks ago. To make matters worse – during that time period I started walking everyday. Long walks around the various shopping centers in town. Imagine how much I could have lost.

As far as I am concerned – this carb reload idea was a mistake I’ll not do again. A wasted 15 days of potential weight loss as far as I am concerned – and like I said, I am hungry. I don’t want to be hungry. I want my Keto adjusted, weight losing self back in a big way. To do that, I’ll push myself – I’ll walk after work, and if at all possible, today I’ll fast from all foods but my coffee and cream.

This diet is important to me – and my success is a must. I absolutely cannot allow myself to fail. I have worked too hard to fail now. I have learned a valuable lesson this week, and I’ll be greatly disappointed in myself if I start backsliding now. I’ll not do that. I cannot do that. I will NOT do that.
