mskestrela's Journal, 05 Sep 16

Well, the foodie in me has awakened after a long slumber. My neighbor brought me a huge shopping bag of pears from her father's tree. I told her I wouldn't eat them, but offered to dehydrate them for her. Dried pears make a wonderful snack!
I used my spiralizer with the flat blade to slice them wafer thin, and now have 9 trays dehydrating. This batch should be done in 10-12 hours. There are still a bunch left, so I decided to surprise her and her hubby with one of my favorite desserts, poached pears. I happened to have a bottle of red wine a client gave me, not knowing that I'm not much of a wine drinker. It's "Menage a Trois Silk, a soft red blend". I tasted a sip to make sure it would work for poaching, and I gotta tell you, that wine could convert me! I used the whole bottle, though, to get rid of it. LOL Lead us not into temptation! The pears are out and a lovely ruby red, while the rest of the poaching liquid reduces to syrup. I did take a couple of tiny tastes to check for flavor, but I don't think it was enough to spike my insulin too badly. I'll be glad to get it out of the house, though! Smells heavenly! I reminded myself today what a good cook I am, and got re-enthused to really make an effort at cooking for myself again.
I hope everyone had a nice Labor Day weekend.

With my appetite and capacity for food having shrunk, cooking for myself has been less rewarding. To spend 45 minutes cooking (and yes, I am a really good cook), only to have 4-5 mouthfuls fill me up is an exercise in futility. And then there's the clean-up! However, I think I may have found the solution that will kill 2 birds with 1 stone. I have a YouTube cooking channel, where I make real, edible dishes on a 1:4 scale, using toy stoves and cookware from the 30's-70's. The scale would be perfect for an 18" doll. I quit making the videos when I went low carb, but there's no reason I can't do LCHF tiny food! And that scale will fit my current appetite to a T. Starting tomorrow, I'll begin making videos again, and eating well.

I cook on a 1947 Chambers gas stove I restored. It's bright red enamel. So, I do know that an old stove can be a heart throb!

@Erika, OMG, I would LOVE to cook on one of those! They are works of art! My stoves are electric, except one 1:12 cast iron wood stove. I have yet to cook with that one, because the largest pot for it only holds a tbsp. of liquid. LOL If you want to see my toys in action, my channel is called, "Let's Make A Little..." The oven on the bigger one gets up to 375+ degrees! I made a complete Thanksgiving dinner last year using a Cornish game hen as my turkey. LOL

Yummy that sounds good. I eat pears, never tried them like that.

@Zak, poached pears are pretty amazing. You can eat them hot, room temp, or chilled. Each one is a slightly different experience. All excellent with vanilla ice cream.

You are a wonderful neighbor and showed strong willpower. I love to bake and have to do it from time to time. But it has to leave the house as soon as it comes out of the oven.

Love your videos on YouTube :)

poached pears are always a good alternative when cooking for a gluten free person, since most deserts involve wheat.
