I've decided that I'm just not willing to give up my evening cocktail. I was curious to see if alcohol has an impact on insulin response, so I did a little digging. I know that alcohol is burned first as fuel, which means that while the body is burning it, it's not burning fat.
I also know that alcohol is the one thing we consume that is NOT digested, but immediately metabolized. But for someone who is insulin resistant, does it spike insulin response? I expected to find that it does.
Surprise, surprise, surprise! (Did you hear Gomer Pyle??? LOL) It turns out in a few clinical trials, one in mice and a couple in humans, that chronic consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol actually INCREASES insulin sensitivity. The action is even more pronounced in T2 diabetics. It also increases the number of free fatty acids in the blood, meaning that fat is being transported out of the cells.
So, if I read that right, not only is it OK to have my cocktail, but it's actually beneficial! WOOT!!!!!!!!
Not to mention the reduction of cortisol from the relaxing effect of da booze on da brain. ;)
Yeah, baby, I'm good to go. Hehehehehe.

Moderation for me, my young sons, and everyone I might eat or drink with in this wondrous life. I love a gin tonic, red wine, margaritas or really good beer, but they all slow down my weight loss. Never been addicted to anything except maybe coffee. To young people, I hope they seek guidance from people in their lives who love them. Digital friends are great, but you need a real flesh and bone friend in your corner. They should evaluate it with open eyes. It all doesn't taste horrible. Some of it is quite delicious but too much, like too much of anything we ingest, isn't good your us. Beware of alcohol and food in excess. Also beware of lousy people who you might find yourself sharing alcohol and food with during your life. They're probably more dangerous.

Draglist: If you enjoy neat Scotch (as I do), try a tiny spot f water in it. And I mean tiny. A drip. It opens up the whisky flavour. I resisted trying it for about 40 years but once I did there was no going back.

@Kathleen, no offense taken. Everyone has different experiences with alcohol, and different tolerances. When I was growing up, my parents always had a martini before dinner, and the kids knew that that was their catch-up time, so we didn't bother them. At dinner, it was family time, and everybody got caught up on the day. It was an important ritual that I adopted when I became an adult. One cocktail in the evening to unwind and get caught up with my online 'family'. Hardly a drinking problem. LOL Just like I've never had a problem with binge eating, likewise with binge drinking. ;)

@Draglist, I really had to dig for the info. I love researching, and the harder the info is to find, the more fun it is for me. I'm glad you found it useful.
