Observation: I went over to my Mom's house last night for a chat and she had her TV going the whole time I was there. I don't own a TV, I haven't for 16 or 17 years. How many of you find it almost impossible not to go rummage in the kitchen after sitting in front of the TV in the evening? I swear there were food commercials every 5 minutes and every time one came on my fasting stomach started rumbling. I did a 3 month hypnosis session a few years back and I am aware of how powerful imagery is to your brain. All of that delicious looking food would send anyone into an eating frenzy. If the networks could figure out how to transmit smells too, we would all be done for. I'm not talking subliminal messaging here, I am simply talking about it constantly bringing food to the forefront of your thoughts. It was a relief to come home to commercial free Netflix and enjoy entertainment without being bombarded by constant cravings to go eat everything in the refrigerator. How do you (the TV watching public) manage the stress of all of the advertising?

This is to funny as just the other evening my wife and I were watching TV and a commercial comes on for Burger King's Whopper (oh how I miss me a good double bacon cheese whopper). Anyhow, I looked at my wife and said that it should be illegal to put any type of food commercial on TV after a certain time. That this is why America is over weight because it causes food cravings late at night and we have to eat. Thank you for posting this because now I know I'm not the only one who feels TV commercials are temptation....

I only watch sports shows live. Everything else is DVRd. I skip the commercials as fast as I can. For me, its the &^#^% Little Caesars Bacon Pizza.

Suzy, I used to have to take anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds because I stayed in an emotional funk all the time. One day I realized it was always worse and I usually ended up in tears after the 6 o'clock news. I turned off my TV, canceled my cable, started buying VHS Movies and DVDs. After about 3 months I threw away the pills and have been pretty much depression free every since. My Mom on the other hand would die without her TV. She always says...How can you function without knowing what's going on in the world. I said...I have you to keep me up to date on important things, and I like to read. I don't miss TV at all, I am no longer buying the fear that they sell.

Best thing I ever did for myself was to ditch the TV 1 1/2 yrs ago.

Somehow I am amazed you went that long without tv... i mean if you are giving up all the poop on tv it still supplies the knowledge i would think one needs about what is going on in the world-then again i can see the reason to not want to either. My daughter does not watch tv. the other two stream shows or movies. If i wasent trying to become more aware of what is actually going on in our government and such i wouldn't watch it ether. My boyfriend pays over 200 a month for cable and dvr and dvr's everything-he actually said he was doing good without sugar then saw a jelly bean commercial and wanted them. I so dislike it. I say we should be out and having lives not sitting here not being productive and such. so congrats to you--please forgive the spelling in this tiny box while at work.

LOL! You might get me on my soapbox about our propaganda spewing media, those are the guys selling the fear. As to getting an accurate unbiased view of what our government is up to......politicians...if their lips are moving..they are lying. You want an accurate picture of what's going on..look around. Are things improving? Not really. Do the powers that be really care about what I think. No, not unless it has money attached to it. I decided to stop trying to take on the problems of the world and just deal with my tiny corner of it, that I CAN do and I don't need a TV to do it.

I'm the same as gr8, dvr and FF those commercials. I'm to the point now where I can ignore that stuff, just like the junk food in the pantry for the FIL, kid and DH. LOL.

9 years ago after feeling we had been deceived yet again by tv programing, my husband climbed up on the roof and dashed the dish to it's permanent death! We determined that the money saved would be used for dvds and series of our choosing. No regrets. I get my headlines from the internet which keeps my sanity healthy. Too much negativity and I don't like my emotions ... I am the one in control :) I did find myself canceling some e-mail subscriptions from health sited because of the fear factor. I do not live with a spirit of fear and once again, I am the one who has control over that :) I do have to hold my breath every once in the while when everyone is posting photos of their food...it's like food porn!!!

We have a joke in my house about this. My Dad will tell me that they are going to eat at so and so because Mom saw a commercial.

We don't watch TV especially, there's a handful of shows I watch on Netflix or streaming and thats it. The kids don't either. I get my news from the internet sites and weather from the channels online. Don't miss it at all. We are pretty active though, and I run in the evenings.

My boyfriend always has the TV on. But I do other things. I knit, paint and do crafts everyday. I am always busy doing something So even though the TV is on I dont actually pay any attention to it. I usually put the TV on for background noise if I dont have music on. However when we watch our shows. I dont get cravings anymore because they are after dinner and I make sure I eat until I am full for dinner, if anything I make tea

I'm always multitasking during commercials so I don't watch them much. I only tune back in when the show comes back on lol. Otherwise I'm doing e-mail, Facebook or something in the house or stretching, exercise etc.

I agree, it can be tough. I even avoid all the amazing cooking shows but low carb really helps stop the cravings.

wow I never thought about how many commercials are on that are food related, and it does not even have to do with food but can be something else but food is in the commercial.

It's funny....I love the cooking shows and rarely get cravings watching them. The food commercials on the other hand can often set me off on a graze.

I'm actually on the same page with you for the past year - No TV BUT for the very reasons that you've outlined...

i'm with you, debrafredrick, we stopped watching network tv - except for the news once a day - and watch netflix. you're so right about the food commercials. they don't really make me want to eat because i've been eating lchf for so many years, but looking at the junk in fast food just kinda turns my stomach!

Wow! We got rid of our TV about the same time as you! And for the same reason! That's awesome!
