So I've been beeping and bopping about LOW CARB vs. LOW CALORIE diets and found an interesting article.

https://authoritynutrition.com/23-studies-on-low-carb-and-low-fat-diets/

The author analyzed the data from 23 studies comparing low-carb and low-fat diets. All of the studies are randomized controlled trials and are published in respected journals.

The result was...drum roll...

The majority of studies achieved statistically significant differences in weight loss (always in favor of low-carb). Also noted:

1) The low-carb groups often lost 2-3 times as much weight as the low-fat groups. In a few instances there was no significant difference.

2) In most cases, calories were restricted in the low-fat groups, while the low-carb groups could eat as much as they wanted.

3) When both groups restricted calories, the low-carb dieters still lost more weight (7, 13, 19), although it was not always significant (8, 18, 20).

4) There was only one study where the low-fat group lost more weight (23) although the difference was small (0.5 kg – 1.1 lb) and not statistically significant.

Point 2 is significant. I looked at the studies and all the low carb diets started at 20 grams or less, many went up to 40 after that using keto sticks to make sure they were still in fat burning mode.

Also, I choose to do LC/HF b/c I burned out my insulin receptors and as a Type II diabetic my blood sugar is sky high and I'm starving all the time when I do Low Fat. You can lose weight on any diet but some may be better choices for you depending on your health history.

I think I saw an article stating that 58% of our diets are from massively processed foods of which are cereals, breads, crackers, etc. People see wheat bread and think "ooh that's healthy for me" but it's filled with junk and little nutritional value. Stick to real foods which can veggies but also includes quinoa, black rice, wild rice, etc. Your body will start functioning better and will not store and hold onto excess fat.

The low carb vs low fat debate just gets old. The best diet is the one you can stick with. Some people do great on low carb, others do better on low fat. In the long run they are about equal. Good luck on whatever path you choose.

Anyone who thinks there is is no science to it should check out Dr. Ludwig's Almost Hungry.

I love my healthy fats (Almond butter, avocado, walnuts, seeds) and my carbs (quinoa, brown rice, Ezekiel bread, steel cut oats) and as long as I eat them as a part of a portion controlled, balanced diet, I lose weight.

LCHF is the only way to go for me.

I am going to dive in and add my two cents, people are different, look at your ancestry, certain groups of people evolved and adjusted to different types of eating, the Native tribes in the Northern Americas, the Intuits, lived a high fat, low carb diet because they had to to survive. Extremely difficult to develop an agri-culture society when you are freezing 8 months out of the year, the Polynesians had fish and fruit, the Romans had huge fields of grain. America is a melting pot of diverse ancestry and no one eating plan will work for bodies that are designed and adapted to whatever was available to them during their inception to modern man. We are talking about thousands of years of adaptation folks, we have been industrialized for less than 100 years that's not even a blip on the radar. Some foils have found their path in Vegan, some have found it in low carb, some have found it in high protein, some have found it in high fat. Some have found it in eating smaller amounts. If we had a direct path we could see and follow into the past, we would see what environment we came from and better understand our issues with our diets.

Bottom line is....what works for me may not work for someone else, we were all born here, but our genes came here from somewhere else before we all blended here. We have changed too many things in a short period of time and everyone is confused and trying to adjust. We have a long way to go before we can adapt...if we survive it, no one has ANY clue what the long term effects of our current toxic environment are going to be.

I haven't seen a few of my favorite people on here in a while. I think they were "beat up" a little bit by others who disagreed with them. They had so much experience and I really enjoyed their posts. They were very helpful to me. I simply cannot understand why we can't all just put out there what works/doesn't work for us and not get bombarded with negativity or hostility. Really, you do not have to give me pages and pages of scientific studies proving this or that. The info is great, and if I remember correctly, this post started out sharing LC vs LF studies, (which I found interesting by the way, thanks Florida!) and rapidly went downhill into a pi$$ing match on who's diet is better. Guess what, I think MY diet is BEST! FOR ME! It is an eating plan that is cobbled together from suggestions from LOTS of YOU! I've taken suggestions from Low Carbers, vegetarians, low calorie people, and more and made it work for ME! I thank you all for that. AND like I say to my grandsons who fight and argue and pick at each other- Knock it off, grandma loves you, but you are on my last nerve, go do something productive!

Low carb is not really a diet. It is a new way of life. Any diet will work, while you are on the diet. Once you have lost the weight and go back to eating, the weight comes back. Eating lchf is eating you can live with and be content and therefore you don't have to go off of it. BUT if eating low calories and low fat is something you can live with, have at it. I say this from years of dieting on all kinds of diets, and what works for me LONGTERM>
