debrafrederick's Journal, 15 Dec 23

Good Morning FS Family! I am still working on getting in my protein through whole foods, so Sunday since it rained all day, I cooked. I rotisseried a 5 pound chicken, I put on a big pot of black beans and I browned about 4lbs of ground venison. I froze them in 6 ounce bags. Hubby had requested some cajun type foods....he wanted me to make gumbo, but it takes so much work...and flour to get the rue done. I have never tried using alternative flours to make it because if it turns out badly he won't eat it and it's expensive to make and then waste. So I asked him if he would accept a box of Zatarain's Jambalaya Mix. I added more celery, onions, pepper and spices to it along with Andouille sausage and shrimp. So my plan had been to add some servings of beans to my meals...which of course runs the carbs up a bit but adds a hefty protein and fiber number to it also. So my lunch yesterday was chicken and black beans, very tasty, very filling. There is also the issue of gas, which I have decided I need to learn to deal with. It's a natural human response to the fermentation that goes on inside the colon....everybody does it and just because I have no control over when that gas is released due to the colostomy, I will just have to deal with the embarrassment that the noise causes. One advantage I do have is...no one can smell it because my bags are not the filtered type. I can go to the bathroom and release the gas and not offend anyone's nose. So last night when I made the Jambalaya, it smelled so good I had to have some....it was high in carbs, but not so much in protein. I pulled out a bag of black beans and a bag of browned venison and mixed them into my 1 cup portion of rice and sausage...I left the shrimp for hubby as it's his favorite. So for the day, I hit 183.2g protein, 102.3g carbs, 82.54g fat for a total of 2008 calories. I'm counting on the resistant starch in the beans helping my gut biome and adding some plant based protein and nutrients to balance out the meat while reducing my dependence on the protein shakes. I went a little over the top with the addition of the rice but my body enjoyed it and I slept well. So my point to this long winded story is...how many of you out there use whole beans as a protein source and how often and if you do use them often, how well do they affect your weight loss efforts?

Wow that is a lot of protein. Good for you. I like beans quite a bit but avoid them when I try to lose weight

Nice job on the protein, Deb!!! I don't really care for beans unless they are refried beans (wouldn't you know it?!🤣)

I rely on beans , lentils and other legumes entirely for my protein. I only eat whole food, and get plenty of fiber with cruciferous veggies like cabbage, spinach, Brussel sprouts. I now weigh 118 at 5’5”.

I find that beans really help weight loss. I eat them more for the satiety and the fiber and resistant starch than for the protein, though of course that matters, too, and it is a lean protein source. It is possible to get used to (gradually!) to a higher fiber diet and handle beans well. I do not get any gassiness after eating beans. I also soak the dry beans overnight for as long as 20-24 hours, and cook them with a piece of kombu (dried seaweed). This helps break down the problematic sugars and lectins in beans that are hard to digest and can be irritating to the gut.

I've eaten beans for the majority of my journey. I didn't care for then growing up. But the last few years I've really taken too them. There's so many good ones and they have a million flavors. I just found a southwest zest pinto bean that is killer. But on most days I'll have 2 to 3 different kinds of beans. Black beans, pinto, black eyed, etc Green beans every day. As others mentioned the fiber and the feeling of fullness is awesome.

Not really. I do enjoy them from time to time. But the calorie to protein ratio and bioavailibility make them a poor choice for me personally as a source of protein. I prefer dairy, eggs, and lean meats for the reasons above. :)

Funny I saw this post just as I was thinking that I need to get a lot of carbs in my system today and also lots of complete proteins… so rice and beans will be my dinner tonight!! I love beans! Personally I eat a lot of them and don’t really get gas from them, so maybe that will improve with time for you. I imagine that as an excellent source of fiber, protein, and healthy carbs that they can’t be bad for weight loss and overall health 👍

Beans are just another tool in the box! It's a side item to use instead of loading up on fries, mash potatoes, or any other heavy fatty carbs that most people eat as sides. If you have beans 2 to 3 times a day. You would get anywhere from 18 to 20 + grams of protein in that day. With no fat included as a plus and the calories are minimal in my opinion per serving size. Let's not leave out the most important part they keep you fuller longer. 99% of people on this app are here to lose weight or maintain. Who wouldn't want to feel fuller longer and eat less? I rest my case your honor🤣😬🙂

Debra that’s a loaded question ! Every single thing we stuff in our face you can look at in regard to weight loss, strength building or for its nutritional and health benefits. Someone who eats green beans and an occasional small serving of pinto beans with marginal protein is substantially different from someone who looks at beans and legumes as a protein source and ignores or cares less about the carbs.

I thought it might be a loaded question Honeebuns, like pretty much everything here, there are different outlooks on it, for so many years while on plan with Keto, I have kept my carbs to a span of 20-40 net per day doing that has diminished my fiber dramaticly, I add fiber to my protein smoothies and I was looking at beans as a possible protein/fiber addition to at least one meal per day. I can easily move to light keto where 100g of net carbs are allowed. Had I not added the rice last night, I would have come in under 100 carbs easily. Rice and beans are not a trigger food for me binging on carbs like bread and sugar are. Joe, I'm looking for something that will stick to my ribs so to speak and make me feel fuller longer...yesterday was bean day and today I have had no awkward moments while at work....while I was doing my workout tho....that's a whole nother story!!! LOLOL it kind of provided a back beat for the workout!!!

@Deb You know me, I always say there's absolutely nothing wrong with self-experiment. 👍 I'm experimenting quite a bit myself right now. 🫰🤞

@Zen I was not aiming for that amount of protein, I just knew that the 2oz or so of sausage that was in the rice was not enough, because the bags in the freezer were fully cooked and easy enough to stir into my portion (hubby hates beans!) and they sounded like a tasty addition to the recipe, I tossed them in and heated them up, because I knew the weights....😁 I wrote it on the bag along with the food name and date 😁 it was easy to know how much to add to my diary. So, I was that much over because I was cooking on the fly rather than pre-planning it. So I was 8 calories over maintenance, still at a deficit of 609 calories for the day. Shot my macro's all to heck, but it's one day, and with all the fiber....I'm sure it will all come out in the end (pun intended)

Thanks guys for the in-depth look at beans for a healthy protein/fiber/resistant starch side to a meal. I won't add them to every meal, but maybe once or twice a week and definately on Sundays where I am prepping for my fast. I appreciate the input!

Personally, I have blown the carbs out of the pantry for a couple of days, especially rice. 🤷‍♀️ Que Sera Sera... 🎵🎶 She works harddddd for her carbs, so harddddd for her carbs. So they better treat her right...🎵🎶 🤪

I have beans everyday lately, so will see soon if it pays off. So nice to have warm foods in the winter. Used to tapioca and rice puddings, cottage cheese with fruit and refrigerated fruit being all cold. Will give protein drinks a try when the weather is nice.

@Deb I aim for 200g of protein a day, but often fall short. I try to get in at least 150g, though. I need some of that 🦌! LOL Great job on the cals! Strength training trends to make me hungry, so I eat...lol. I only worry about weeks total cals. 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, I look at it weekly also, if I use just my BMR of 1637 x 7 = 11,459, so with 3 days fasting I could eat 2000 calories every eating day 2000 x 4 = 8000 and still have a deficit of 3,459 per week...that's just BMR, it does not include any extra activity. It's hard for me to increase that much. Literally I have to be at home, all day, doing basically nothing but cooking and eating to arrive at that number. When I leave the house, I never stop and get anything to eat, I don't eat at work....never have unless we are having an event of some sort. Last night hubby brought home wings and fried oysters, he orders my wings unbattered and no sauce, I add my own sauce when he gets home. I had a protein smoothie for breakfast, I had to run to town and go to the vets office and pick up my babies prescriptions, then go to tractor supply to pick up a load of food to feed them , got back by 9:30, unloaded and put everything away, got the girls medicated then rushed off to go do my workout from 10-11, then shower and change and off to work I go......no time for cooking and eating! LOL So I did not put anything out to thaw, hubby called to see if I had planned dinner, I had not....so wings it was! Still ended the day at around 1500.
