Toni Bourlon's Journal, 15 Oct 21

Well, maybe I'm just being paranoid, but with all the talk of inflation & shortages I convinced my hubby to stock up on frozen food. I've been talking about how we've worked on emptying the freezer, and we've done a pretty good job of that, but now it's time to refill. I plan to get mostly staples like ground beef, chicken, some steaks & fish, and lots of frozen veggies. I may also pick up some canned beans & tomatoes. Hubby also wants to get bread, he seems to think the cost of bread will skyrocket & I've not had much luck with the home baked kind. Anyway, hopefully I can keep him from buying the crap food that he normally gets. Seriously, between all that and the political situation in the USA, I'm starting to think the doomsday preppers have the right idea!

No way is that paranoid, it’s responsible. I have a couple months worth of emergency food storage but I don’t trust freezing alone so I suggest 25 year shelf life dehydrated meals. I’ve also been thinking about rice and beans sealed in mylar in 5 gallon buckets. If you don’t need it, great! But if you do…you’re ready.

I don’t know about bread though…that isn’t going to keep well frozen long term. White flour can last 3-5 years stored in sealed Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers…not wheat flour…only white. Same with rice, only long grain white, no brown rice for long term storage.

I agree that food will be more expensive and already we know some of the items are harder to find but I am lucky I know how to make my own bread I always have my garden loads of dried beans and rice and a freezer in my second refrigerator I always have my corn meals and my wheat flour so I have a wheat grinder that I can grind my own and never hurts to be prepared

stocking my freezer

We keep a full size freezer and and a smaller freezer stocked, as well as a panty of dried and non-perishable goods. Rotation of goods is key to making it work!

I've been shopping like that for years. Technically, our household won't go hungry for a year. Worse case scenario I will become a homesteader. RM, you get more chickens & live off your land. Cost cutting involves in not eating out or ordering take away. As we now are learning to do without extras, food cost have gone down. I make meals that require less cook time. Food cost is not the factor. Utility & high taxes are more of an issue for middle income folks supporting the economic system. Hubs is always upset at why we have so much staples in the house. I just don't bother to explain everything. My friends are testing solar ovens. I don't trust cooking chicken in it. But, definitely can cook some vegetables.
