melissatwa's Journal, 23 Sep 21

Today is my final post from our trip to Germany and beyond. We arrived home last night and, with jet lag, morning has come very soon. I have posted a lot of pictures over this last month, as a record of what I was able to do because of not carrying a miserable obese body around on two tired feet. Because of FS, this is my "after!"

Our last day was spent in Heidelberg with our 18 year old son and German "daughters." We saved this beautiful place for last, and had a perfect day enjoying a little over 26,000 steps. We walked up to the castle and then around the old town for a long time. We also hiked to the amphitheater across the river and up the hill. It was a pretty steep, winding, easy to get lost, trek up from the river! I jogged up the actual amphitheater steps to the top... Twice! The kids were too tired! It is 200 meters from the podium area to the top steps! I am so grateful for the fitness I have acquired over the last couple years here on FS! The encouragement from you all and from my wonderful husband to get fit and stay there has helped me endlessly!

I have been without any scales (bathroom and kitchen) for a month, and I have had mountains of delightful food! For a couple weeks, I really felt like I was managing pretty well and holding my own. I could have been self deceived, but my pants were still feeling good, which was what I was using as my measure of "progress." Although not exactly tight now, I can tell the calories have really caught up with me. Some significant extra padding is clearly visible, and my unforgiving, full length mirror in my home shows I am not where I should be. I will be working on reduction over the next while... might be quite a long while. I don't even want to step on a scale for a few days. It will show water weight is high. I got pretty dehydrated the last couple days and had a lot of sodium. Then there was the long flight home...I feel so swollen!

Anyway, I'm back to my job right away and I have a ton to do over the next days. Reality...

Thank you for all of your support! Now back to the gym, long walks, and logging both my weight and food daily. I'll get there!

KAGrimm and mbuzz95, thank you!! Nikina, I appreciate so much your support! It did feel so good to go and go and go and not feel tired. I'm dreading being still and having to "manufacture" reasons to move, but I know how important it is to keep going. I really have to remember constantly that as long as possible I want to be strong and able to be confident! Thank you from this side of the "pond!"

I've viewed your pics with great interest. Did you see the University? Was there much flooding there? Mom and I are leaving in a couple weeks starting in Prague, then to Budapest, up the Danube and Rhine to Amsterdam. Heidelberg is only an hour and a half from Wertheim so we're going near there. I'm glad you had a good time. You look good, like you were never even a pound over weight. Thanks so much for the great pics.

So gorgeous! You have the test of your life to count calories and go to the gym. You thoroughly enjoyed your vacation and that's what it's all about. Glad you made it home safely! We'll talk soon. 😉

Thanks for your response to my comments. Just wanted to add that your pictures inspired me and definitely made me miss what I consider my other Homeland! I was very happy to see that you were able to finally make this trip and it amazed me at how many places you were able to go! When we go I'm definitely adding Rothenburg and Heidelberg on my list based on your beautiful pictures. Although I have been to both, I think hubby would love the history and quaintness of those towns. Thank u for sharing!💜🙏

Do not concern yourself with whatever the gain. You walked, you hiked you climbed stairs—- all heart healthy activities. No one’s weight stays stagnate. Now, just continue on with your normal way of eating and your routine activities.. no extraordinary activities required— no starving yourself to “make up” for what you ate. Just keep going. — remember, healthier eating most of the time and exceptions for trips to Europe.

Jipper500, we didn't go to the university area this time, but we have been in the Heidelberg university library in the past. Wow! A couple of our friends attended school there. We have been to Heidelberg many times, and I love it so much! ♥️ They didn't have flooding in this area. Even the part of the Mosel river we visited had no flooding damage. It sounds like you have a perfectly amazing trip planned! I hope you have a fantastic time! Share pictures!!! We visited Prague with friends ten years ago for four days. ! I long to return!!! We had such a great time. Eleven of us shared an apartment just off the river by the old city. So wonderful!

I'm so glad, Diana, that you have enjoyed the pictures! We also were amazed it worked out to be on the move so much. We went on day trips or multi-day trips with many friends. That enabled us to venture far further and with a tiny fraction of the expense that would be normally expected as tourists. We didn't expect to even get out of Germany,, so our visit to France and the Netherlands was just extra wonderful. Our son even got up to visit his friends in Sweden for the better part of a week. One of our girls was on a road trip with friends and met up with him in Stockholm! 😁 I hope your trip will materialize soon and be better than you even hope! It will be so great to revisit a world you know so well! ❤️

Thank you, Shir! I can't wait to tell you about some of the crazy adventures we went on! As amazingly well traveled as you are, bet you have been to many of the places we visited.

Thanks, Kenna! I am not as stressed out by the weight as I would have been a year ago. My habits are well enough ingrained now that I am pretty confident I'll get things back to where I should be. I am thankful for this special trip, and I'm not going to beat myself up for this "exceptional" time. I am tempted to restrict and fast and panic, but I'm just going to slowly get my weight back to normal. Wow! It is my "normal!" I think that is the first time I've ever said that!!!!

Kattay, I felt like you were with me! I don't think you ever let me post anything the last 30 days without a kind and encouraging comment! Thank YOU! I do think my legs are in really strong shape, and my knee feels so great! Who knew I needed a month of constantly walking to provide the therapy it needed!? I wasn't lifting at all, so I need to make sure I go slowly and don't lose ground when I get back to the gym. I'll trying really hard not to push too hard. It is always easier for me to work out than eat moderately, but I know it is the intake that matters more to weight loss than exercise... Darn... I so love to eat! 😁
