So here is what the user manual says about the numbers from my new Tanita scale:

(Apparently, I'm a badass and didn't know it - LOL.)

Check this out...

Weight - 214.6
Total body fat pct - 15.6 (I'm right in the middle or normal for my age)
Total body water pct - 61.6 (normal range 50-65)
Visceral fat rating - 9 (normal range 1-12 -- cool)
Muscle mass lbs. - 172.4 (the weight of my muscles)
Physique rating - 6 (standard muscular - average body fat and higher than normal muscle mass level)
Bone mass lbs. - 8.8 (slightly higher than normal)
Daily Calorie Intake - 4255 -- my BMR times 1.78 (so my BMR is 2390)
Metabolic age - 21 (the average age associated with that metabolic rate)

So, feeling pretty good about these numbers.

For one thing, if my body fat percentage is this low, it means that I can only metabolize 1004 calories per day from fat into energy. So I can see that I am typically eating too few calories.

I can see how the muscle mass, body fat percentage, and bone mass all work together. What is blowing my mind is that my muscle mass plus my bone mass equals about 180 lbs. That was the ultimate target I was aiming for by April 1, 2014, but that would mean I would have ZERO body fat in order to get to that number!

Even if I get to 190, that's only 5 percent body fat. So, am I misunderstanding these numbers or was my target weight (as indicated by a perfect BMI of 184.3) too low for my musculature?

What say you, numbers freaks? bp

Wow great set of numbers, and shows the hard work you've done. I don't pretend to fully understand all this, or even just how exact all those readings can be, surely there must be some margin for error? but fantastic result. I'm guessing KK will fully understand - I certainly don't. S

LOL. DO - NOT - PANIC! :) I'm right here. It sure IS a nice set of numbers - and you're right, you might have set your final goal too low, at least if you want to pack a nice set of muscles. When I reached 170 lbs a few years ago, I had little to NO muscles, and a body fat percentage of 5! It was not pretty, and it would be absolutely impossible to maintain. I look WAY better, and FEEL way better today, weighing almost 20 lbs more. It's all muscle and water, with a little extra fat, but the feeling is definitely much much better. Your metabolic age deserves a standing ovation! How old are you (in real life) again? Your hard work has really paid off in all these numbers. I do think you should definitely focus on NOT having a larger deficit than 1000, maybe even go for a smaller deficit than that. There is absolutely no need to tap into muscles to lose weight for you. A lot of the numbers (like bone mass - do you REALLY care?) are there for our statistics, but we can't really do a whole lot to change them. Some we CAN change, but we don't really need to either (like water percentage). Something that IS interesting is your Daily Calorie Intake (or Total Daily Energy Expenditure). It's HIGH. This is a good thing. You're already a calorie burning MONSTER! I love seeing that. This is why things are getting easier and easier for you. The one thing I see missing on my TANITA scale is the physique rating. This one I don't have, for some reason. I do check it at the gym when I do my test there, and it's a solid 3. Average athletic. I can live with that. Overall, Bill, you're doing frickin' well. How are you liking that scale? I bet you're gonna give it hugs and kisses all day. :)

Great numbers. Even if they are not 100% accurate you can now use them as baseline to track your progress. I can only compare them with my DH's stats and I do not see anything unusual. He would have had to lose muscles mass as well to get into "normal" BMI range. If you have large frame you can add 10% to calculate your adjusted BMI range, and it still does not account for muscle mass. Congratulations, you have reasons to celebrate (though not with food ;))

Quote "(like bone mass - do you REALLY care?)" I really care! As we age our bone mass drops, broken hip anyone???? Weight bearing exercise increases bone mass which is a really good thing. Keeping that number as high as you can will keep you moving for many more years, should it drop you won't be able to do much at all whereby all the other numbers will go to pot too. Keep up with what your doing, all your numbers are amazing. Health is far more important than appearance. Your one healthy dude by the looks of it.

Hi Bill, I don't understand all the numbers, truly, I'm lost BUT I think you rock, I think you look great and I think you are doing great. Whatever you are doing is working so keep doing it. Just keep us 'simple' people in mind too :) Hope you are enjoying having Jason around, is he staying until New Years?

Ooooh that sounds like a fun evening, and to have both kids home at the same time for a week - well that will make your Christmas. Enjoy the heck out of them, as they will of you. You have a lovely family. And yes I thought your son wouldn't have the full 2 weeks with you because he is still in the Services but it's great that he wants to spend his leave with his folks. You guys must be awesome parents.

Hey, Bill!!! That is utterly AMAZING!!! You are doing so unbelievable well, you badass! Which Tanita did you pick up again? I may have to look at that. I can't believe your numbers, you are really rocking this thing! So, are you planning on changing your goal weight, then? Have a blast with the kids home. It'll be like old times (kind of). And enjoy that musical tonight. Life is good! Best wishes!
