Day 4 of a planned 5 days of ‘no solid food’ fasting

Because of travelling and work schedule, I haven’t been to the gym in three weeks. This reminds me that lifting weights is not good for weight maintenance. Due to schedules and injuries it is not possible to do it without taking breaks.

I will try to get into the gym next week…

😎 Life is Good! Have a great day everyone!

@Erquiaga - I didn't realize that you cannot walk great distances, I know you are doing great! :)

Yep, Adef, I have several autoimmune diseases. One being Stiff Person Syndrome. It is neurological and muscular. It impacts just the lower part of my legs. Only one in a million people contract it and there is no known cure. Ever seen a fainting goat? That's me. 🤓

I just googled fainting goat.

AboutMyTribe, it doesn't happen very often. I haven't had a full fall in about a year. Do have spasms where I completely freeze in place and cannot vocalize. Usually under five seconds total.

HardDaysKnight, that is a great description of the method. I find single sets, done slowly to failure, reduces the stress on my joints. I also start some of my lower body sets, such as for glutes, with a lift and hold for 30 to 60 seconds, to assure I am activating the targeted muscle group. That idea came from "Strong Curves". It's especially helpful when I am getting stronger, getting ready to increase the weight.

Erquiaga, that sounds tough to deal with - glad it doesn't happen often.

adef, sorry we seem to be hijacking your post . . .

Nah, just about once a day. No biggie. Really.

I already apologized, but can't seem to stop.😘

HDK and Gz9gjg...some new words to add to my vocab and some reading to do. Thanks!

Gz - Yeah, that's interesting. I was looking at Glute Lab (by the same author) as a possible purchase, but it is pricey. Anyway, sounds like we're on the same page. FWIW, McGuff is hyper conservative about injury and he makes a divide between that stuff that we do for fun, and that stuff we do for health. For fun, do what you want, it's your body. With exercise for health he wants to treat it like medicine. What's the minimum amount to do, and how often, to get the effect we want, and avoid side effects (like injury to joints). So, the effect we want is more muscle (all things being equal, muscle is health, according to McGuff). He thinks he can keep exercise down to 15 minutes/week, following the superslow, heavy weight, high intensity protocol. At the same time, he admits that a lot of people once they start to build muscle and feel better will want to do a lot more. Ugh, I'm going on too long! Sorry Adef! I'm part of the hijack!

Great info on lifting. I have some reading to do as well. Thanks all! And thank you Adef for getting the conversation rolling.

I really appreciate the information as well. When I do my workouts, I do them slowly but 15 minutes per week or spending less time than I do sounds great. I am lazy and should do them more often.

HDK, I spend more like 45 minutes, 2 x per week; plus 1 hour walks 3 - 5 days per week. What is "Glute Lab"? I thought "Strong Curves" was expensive - $35 on Amazon.

I think lifting weights is only one part of the fitness equation and it's good to take breaks for recovery. I do think that resistance training is good for those who can perform it. It's made a huge difference for me. There are other ways to exercise our bodies. When I'm traveling I like to pack along my resistance tubes and bands. They help me burn enough calories to reach my caloric output goals daily and fit in my suitcase. My Doctor pointed out that exercise is what we do in addition to every day life to make every day life better. I hope you don't consider me an abusive bully because I advocate a balanced nutritious diet. I do consider food as medicine and the biggest part of the maintenance equation. Not everyone needs the same medicine and not everyone needs to eat the same foods. The same foods don't work for everyone. I respect your food choices. Sadly, there are haters who frequent social media and promote arguments on every platform they visit. They visit sites where they don't have any intention of using the tools available on that site. Their only purpose is to inject personal off topic attacks. I pray that I'm not one of them. Keep doing what works for you!!!

Thanks for all the helpful information about slower workouts. I do not have any health issues but like Adef I do worry about injuries due to age and don't exercise like some of the younger ones do.

Good information, John. Thanks.

Adef, I found so much interesting and useful information on this thread, today. Thanks to all of you for the variety of styles, sources, and methods you use to maintain a balanced life.

I'm asking John10251- Who on this site starts problems? I've never used the chat rooms so it would be nice to know who to avoid.
