Good idea! I will make a list, challenge myself to get rid of at least one bag of clothes and shoes today!!
I actually thought about buying some books or magazines on the topic, but DUH, defeats the less stuff lifestyle I want!!! Soooo, I’ll be checking the library for any books on it. Because I really want to do this right and make it stick... because in the long run my goal is to save money and build a custom container home on a plot of land!!

If you haven’t worn in over a year, get rid of it. Good time of year to donate clothing to Goodwill, Salvation Army, Woman’s Crisis Center, homeless shelter. God Bless

I have two seasonal wardrobes - usually only 8-10 tops and 3-4 bottoms... knowing that the colors and patterns are complimentary (think: Garanimals)... every now-and-then I take two items to Goodwill, and pick up two more (keep it fresh, without increasing volume in my closet).

Great advice. I actually have thought about just buying the same pants I know I like and get rid of it all and then just buy tops I like in a few colors and keep things simple. The amount of clothes I have and don’t wear is kind of embarrassing... 😔

check out theminimalists.com for some inspiration. I started with some 30 day challenges (1 item on day 1, 2 items on day 2 and so on). I try to do that once a year, but it also helps to kick start the process and mind set. The Marie Kondo approach is also helpful - pick up each item and ask if it brings you joy, if not, say thank you to it and then get rid of it! It helps for those of us who have sentimental attachment to some things. Good luck!

Just wanna throw this out there: Goodwill is a for profit company with enormous profits. Salvation Army and smaller donation-based stores are often not for profit.

One thing I do, is to get rid of five things at a time. Example being my bathroom drawers were stuffed with too much crap. So I committed to removing five items straight to the trash weekly. Sure it took me weeks but I can open a drawer now and feel good about them. I actually feel relieved and pleased with myself! Baby 👶 steps

I moved to an island, brought 1 big suitcase, 1 small carry-on, and mailed 1 box of books and bits of precious. It was an all at once sort of thing for me.

My family used to practice, if you did not wear it or use it in the past year it got donated! Salvation Army will also come and pick up from your home.

I'm not what you would call a minimalist. However, two years ago, we sold our house, moved to one that is 1,000 square feet smaller, and donated a truckload of stuff to Salvation Army. I felt better. Still, I kept the things that put a smile on my face, such as our family photos and our Christmas decorations.

Never leave the 'cost' of holding onto something out of your mental process. Yeah, maybe someday you'll need that phone charger, or sweatshirt, or special whisk, but remember that buying a 'new' one exactly when you need it is often far cheaper at the end of the day then holding onto something.

i find it easier to get rid of “stuff” if I actually find a real person to give them to. Amongst my friends we seem to have a pipeline to great nieces, grandkids or others who at their stage in life still need gently used stuff. I also donate to women’s shelters. I swim everyday at the local Salvation Army (the worlds greatest Olympic size swimming pool with wonderful neutrally warm water— another story.J. They keep a list of items that are in constant need for helping people furnish apartments or who have a need for household goods. Also senior retirement complexes are another place to donate items. Check with one in your area and see if they have a wish list for a specific client that they know has very little.

I take bags of clothes to the donation box a couple of times a year. If I haven't worn it in a year, I put it in the bag. I need to do that with my shoes, too. I have many pairs that need to go into a bag and taken to the donation box. It does give me a lighter happier feeling to be able to close the closet doors instead of having stuff bulging out. So much neater. A neat space looks bigger, too. Good Luck!

I've had decent luck selling some items on local facebook groups etc too. Not that I'm against donating but its a great way to make a little extra money if you need it.

I started with creating a wardrobe that you could mix and match multiple items into tons of different outfits.
