Windlepoones's Journal, 01 Dec 16

Wednesday came and with the postman so too did my new headphones. I thought great charge them up and try them. Busying myself with other things I forgot about them until after dark. I needed some provisions so decided a good test would be to walk to the high street shops listening to the tracks on one of my play lists.

I was very impressed by the overall sound, the reproduction was much better than my old headphones. The Bluetooth and active noise reduction, (ANR) worked well too. By the time I reached the high street the rush hour was still in full flow. I found the traffic noise was greatly reduced and with my music playing were almost inaudible. Flipping the ANR switch from on to off allowed the outside world to come crashing back in.

I noticed some people were staring at me as I walked along. I thought to myself, “Hmm surely someone wearing headphones can’t be new.” I soon found out what the curious stares were about. Catching sight of myself in a shop windows I could see there were two LEDs one on each of the cans. A blue one on one side and a green one on the other, they look like navigation lights on an aircraft or ship. How remiss or the designer not to make them red and green.

They are only noticeable at night, but then appear very prominent. A silly design mistake, but I guess if worn in an unlit rural location could be regarded as a safety feature. A myopic car driver would probably think they were the landing lights of a small UFO and would be sure to give them a wide berth.

Anyway with Thursday came my gym day. I thought now for the acid test. It was a good day to try the headphones a new member of staff at the gym either liked the MTV and FLAVA video streams very loud or was partially deaf. Two Pac, 50cents and Snoop Dog where booming out over the gyms sound system. I’m not sure what the genre of music is called, probably Garage, Rap or Hip Hop, but defiantly not to my taste.

Turning the headphones ANR on was bliss, all I could hear was my own music. There were however two downsides. When people spoke to me I couldn’t hear a word they were saying until I switched the ANR off. The other was the Crunch exercise machine’s handles were too close together to wear the headphones. The clearance between the cans and the handles was so close I would probably have pulled my ears off.

Oh well I suppose wearing kit that makes me look like an escaped cyber man from an obscure episode of Dr Who does have its draw backs. My verdict, I’m going to keep them.
