Windlepoones's Journal, 20 Sep 16

I needed a haircut. Instead of driving to the barbers I walked. That notched up an extra exercise session of 30 mins. On the way back I walked past my local pub, a J. D. Moons without dropping in for a quick pint, I felt very saintly.

Over lunch I watched a documentary diet special about sweeteners and fats. Apparently the entire collection of sweetener’s, bar one are highly processed. Interestingly they are all legal. The least processed of those tested was “Stevia”, but even Stevia’s natural process of boiling the dried plant leaves and stirring uses Glycol to extract the finished product. Isn’t that the same chemical used in car antifreeze?

A food scientist gave a superb explanation of how fats get absorbed or not into our bodies. Apparently refined cooking oils pass straight through the stomach and are absorbed as fat into our bodies via the intestinal tract.
However hard fats such as full fat cheese spend longer in the stomach where they are broken down into hard fats and calcium. The nutrients are absorbed, but the calcium and fat are then recombined into a form of indigestible mash, which passes harmlessly through our digestive tract and are excreted as waste without making us fat.

The more I hear and read about the LCHF diet the more sense it makes.

I do try to avoid sweeteners. That's not to say I don't have them as sometimes I like a gin and diet tonic! If I particularly want to sweeten something, I use a little honey mostly.
