This morning I was rudely awaken at 06:00am by a little furry alarm clock – Patches!

She is one of my cutest kitties. I always make a fresh supply of both dry and wet food available at night for our kitties. The feline/human agreement we have with them is, “If you come in late at night or early morning, don’t wake Lulu Lowcarb or me from our slumbers”. However, best laid plans of mice and men. What sometimes happens is an interloper, possibly one of my neighbours cats, “Orio are you listening?” may get in and help themselves to the night time banquet. This triggers a sequence of events…

Like the story of the three bears Patches had come home in the early AM. She visited her feeding bowls and… horror of horrors all the good stuff was gone. Patches is my smallest long haired tuxedo cat. She is an adult cat of nearly five years, but her build and size is that of a four month old kitten. She is incredibly friendly and confident. She also knows she is irresistible, so faced with the challenge of obtaining fresh kitty kibbles she strolled upstairs pushed open the door to the bedroom to find me in a deep sleep. At first she sings her feed me song, which is un-mistakable. Her voice is a very definite “Smoke and whiskey” gravelly series of meows. She reminds me of a small feline version of Macey Gray.

At this point I was vaguely aware of her presence as her singing permeated down through my layers of sleep stasis. I ignored her hoping she would go to sleep as sometimes she does, but then she assumed I needed to know what the weather was like outside. Hopping up on the bed she started to brush my face with her wet fur. My subconscious whispered to me, “Oh dear it’s raining outside”. Determined to continue my slumbers I ignored her, thinking perhaps she will go away or just go to sleep. It was not to be. She was really hungry so having executed most of her best moves to no avail, she stepped up her game plan and used her killer move, always guaranteed to get results and her final test to see if I was still alive. She sat on my face and started licking my hair.

Now wide awake I sat up somewhat startled, looking down at her now on my lap, just in time to see her switch to her most adorable Ewok mode. She makes her eyes as big as possible then flops over on her side exposing her tummy and gyrating on her back. She follows that up with a prolonged meeeeeeow. It’s kitty speak and means tickle my tum, then when you’ve had enough of that get up and feed me. It works like a charm. She has me well trained. I could lock her out of the bedroom, but that’s not an option, because I could never lock her out of my heart.

In the kitchen I cleaned and refilled the kitty bowls. While I was emptying the dish washer I heard a rubbing against the cat flap portal. Opening the back door I could see it was Honey, my biggest cat a short haired tabby. She is a big girl. Not fat just very well built, “Thinks…..must be on a ketone diet”. She looked up at me as if to say, “G’morning”. She is a kitty of few words with a barely discernible meow and a very faint purr. After a short greeting of rubbing her flank against my ankles she chowed down on her favourite choice of kibble.

I left my backdoor open and soon the rest of the brood trotted in to chow down. Their tails made a pattern around the feeding bowls not unlike a carefully arranged collection of Davey Crocket frontiers men hats.

Thinking about food I overdid my diet yesterday with too many carbs and calories. So I thought this morning I would keep breakfast light and start the day with a full fat coffee and 25mls of double cream. Mmmmm it went down a treat I savoured every sip and surprise surprise I didn’t feel very hungry. I thought I would hold off on a cooked breakfast and try a brunch at midday. Midday came and went and I was still not hungry. Thinks… perhaps a full fat coffee in the morning with double cream is a good idea.

At one o’clock, Mrs Lulu Lowcarb called me down stairs for lunch. I said, “What happened to brunch?” She replied, “I wasn’t hungry either, but we had better eat to stop getting ravenous later”. She served up the leftovers from a pot of her chicken stew she had made and froze last week. That was one generous bowl of chicken stew. Our soup bowls hold two cups. It was soooo tasty as are most meals on this full fat low carb (LCHF) diet. I was feeling full again. My taste buds seemed to be on steroids.

I felt creative so went to my study computer to piece together an advert. About 16:00hrs a smell of baking started to drift up the stairs. Lulu was being creative too. I wasn’t feeling hungry yet, but who can resist being nosey with the smell of baking permeating the air. In the kitchen she had just pulled from the oven 24 low carb cupcakes. I think our American cousins call them muffins. The pieces of fruit glistening on top of the golden brown cakes, beckoned me. I was instructed not to touch as they were piping hot.

She suggested we have a cup of tea and withdrew to the lounge, leaving me alone with the kettle and the hot cupcakes cooling on the hob. You guessed it I couldn’t resist and it tasted great and only 2.5 grams of carbs per cupcake. I downed another three with a dollop of plain yoghurt and two cups of tea. I have submitted the recipe and it’s now awaiting approval.

We had dinner around 19:00hrs a very tasty spinach salad, with humus, olives, sweet corn, a boiled egg and a small low carb beef patty.

Hi Windle. I'm still without internet at home (fault on line) so will keep this short. I think you're very brave (kind) keeping cat flap open all night. I lock my cat in before I go to bed then let him out when I get up. The door between downstairs and upstairs stays very firmly closed so no cat waking me up in the early hours. I wake enough times in the night as it is without that - lol!

Hi Doobs Temporary loss of your internet connection must be very frustrating. Let’s hope it’s restored soon. I call the kitties in at night, but calling and even shaking their treats box as a lure doesn’t always work. So I just give them free access, but they have to know how to work the cat flap. Most of the neighbours interlopers haven’t figured it out yet. :) 

Patches is beautiful! I couldn't see the photo on my mobile. I'm stealing some of my husband's phone data to have a quick look at the internet on my laptop. Better not stay on here long though! Plusnet are useless but at least they're letting us have a month free because it's nearly a week now that we've had no land line or WiFi.
