I've decided that I'm just not willing to give up my evening cocktail. I was curious to see if alcohol has an impact on insulin response, so I did a little digging. I know that alcohol is burned first as fuel, which means that while the body is burning it, it's not burning fat.
I also know that alcohol is the one thing we consume that is NOT digested, but immediately metabolized. But for someone who is insulin resistant, does it spike insulin response? I expected to find that it does.
Surprise, surprise, surprise! (Did you hear Gomer Pyle??? LOL) It turns out in a few clinical trials, one in mice and a couple in humans, that chronic consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol actually INCREASES insulin sensitivity. The action is even more pronounced in T2 diabetics. It also increases the number of free fatty acids in the blood, meaning that fat is being transported out of the cells.
So, if I read that right, not only is it OK to have my cocktail, but it's actually beneficial! WOOT!!!!!!!!
Not to mention the reduction of cortisol from the relaxing effect of da booze on da brain. ;)
Yeah, baby, I'm good to go. Hehehehehe.

What about the effect it has on kidneys? LOL

@AdvoWade, my kidneys seem to handle it pretty well. They are healthy, and my output is normal.

@JMA, I usually opt for dark (unspiced) rum with Diet Coke with Lime. In the hotter weather, though, I'm finding gin and diet tonic very refreshing. Wine does have carbs, and it actually hits me harder than the distilled spirits, for some reason, so I stay away from it.

I think I just read something about tequila and losing weight. I don't drink much so just kind of glanced at article on facebook...

I love a glass of wine, but the other day I tried to drink a glass of chardonnay and found it too sweet! I couldn't believe it. My son and daughter-in-law immediately told me to put it down because when they'd once been on Atkins for about two weeks they both got immediately sick on one glass of wine. I haven't had any sugar in almost 2 months now but never expected this response. Any ideas here?

@PhillySue, be the sober driver when you go out with friends?

@Kes, thanks for the great news! I'm going to go get a low cal cocktail right now. Cheers!

@Rckc, if Butter Bob says butter makes your pants fall off, there's a country music song that says tequila makes ALL your clothes fall off. LOL Whatever it takes, baby! :D

@PhillySue, wine does have sugars in it, and once you've gotten to burning fat instead of glucose, you become sensitized to any ingestion of glucose. Add to that the alcohol metabolism, it's not surprising they got sick, and you actually tasted the sugar in the Chardonnay. Stick to distilled spirits, but be careful...they will hit you harder when you're fat adapted!

@Kpw, a word of caution here. If you're counting calories, all booze does contain some. For us, the Keto folks, we bonus out because distilled spirits contain no carbs. If you can find a cocktail that fits within your daily calorie allowance, go for it! *Politically correct disclaimer*: Always drink responsibly!

Oh, I'm good! I have low cal stuff and am very happy right now! I'm maintaining around 144 at least until I get through what we call Fall Hell at work, so I have room for the calories. Have a lovely weekend!

@Kpw, you go, gurl! You have a lovely weekend, too! I have a sweet, unexpected 3-day weekend coming up, so I'm in full relax-yet-get-stuff-done mode.

Thanks, Kes, good to know. I'm not a big drinker, but I do enjoy a drink when I'm out to dinner. The other day I just wanted to toast my Mom but was only able to deal with one sip. Oh well, not the worst thing.

Yea booze! All my support!

Kes, The Paleo people have quite a bit to say about this. As I recall they go for clear spirits: gin and vodka. Check out Dave Asprey, maybe that's where I heard some discussion on it: he's always a bit of a cowboy.

Enjoy Kes! :)

I enjoy the odd Malt Whisky of an evening. I have a small collection. My favourite is an Ardbeg with just the merest spot of tap water. The only problem I have is the "Kebab Effect", where drink in the evening brings on the munchies. I have to have my whisky, then straight to bed, to avoid stuffing my face! Wine is almost as bad as drinking full strength soda.

@Jocko, yeah, I can sympathize with the "Kebab Effect", although there's no place around here to get a decent kebab. The alcohol does lower your inhibitions and resolve, to some extent. I keep carefully measured portions of nuts on hand to have with my drink at night, and it works well.

@Erika, I've been watching some of Dave Asprey's videos. I'll look into what he says about booze. Oh, and I saw your comment that was meant for here on another journal. LOL Gin and poker. :D

I was diagnosed with cirrhosis this year just from having a fatty liver from the years of being overweight. I drank a glass of wine maybe 4 to 5 times a YEAR. If getting a fatty liver just from overeating and turning to cirrhosis without alcohol being the factor, I sure don't want to ADD alcohol on top of it.
