Busy day at the salon! It was good, though. People's spirits are high this time of year, so it's almost a party atmosphere. And the money's not bad, either! :)
The folks at the nail salon next door are really nice. The owner dropped off a huge platter of Chik-Fil-Ay mini biscuits and chicken. Smelled good, but no thanks. However, they also get deliveries of typical Vietnamese foods a couple of times a week. Today, I happened to be outside when one of the trucks pulled up. Someone had bought about 6 chickens, and they were sticking up out of the bags....they still had the feet on them, the way they do in Asia. I haven't had 'caldo de patas' for ages, so I thought I'd buy one. Asked the guy how much they were, and heard him say, $7.10. A bit pricey for chicken, but I wanted to try it. When I went to pay him, I handed him a $10 bill and a dime. He held it for a minute and said, it's $17! Holy crap! He saw the look on my face, and said, "It's not like chicken you usually get. Is MUCH better! At that point, I had to see what a $17 chicken tastes like.
I get it home, and open the bag to get a good look at it, and there were a few surprises.
1-not only did it have it's feet, it also had its head! Beak cut off,and fully featherless, but half-closed eyes staring at me.
2-it was only partially gutted. The intestines were gone, but the heart, liver, lungs and other various organs were still inside, and attached to the cavity.
3-it's SKINNY! LOL! Instead of the plump, rounded breasts we're used to seeing on chickens, the breasts were almost concave, the legs are very long and lean, the thighs almost fat-free. I'd say the whole thing, with head, feet and organs weighs in at maybe 4 lbs.
Now, I'm not squeamish in the least, when it comes to my food. I've eaten almost as much 'bizarre' food as Andrew Zimmern has, what with growing up in South America. But I've never bought a chicken like this. So I'm thinking it's going in the stockpot, with all the bits and pieces, and will make the best chicken soup I've ever made. Or not. LOL!
I didn't make it to swim this afternoon, though. By the time I finished my last client, it was 45 minutes past closing, and I was beat. I got home, got the cats fed, and had just sat down to relax and think about what to make for 'breakfast', since I hadn't eaten all day...when my neighbor called and asked if I'd eaten yet. She was mad at her hubby who had gone to a new ATV park while she had to work, and she wanted to vent. So we went for Mexican food, and I talked her down...sorta. She's one of those people that loves to be mad, and always complains about something. Needless to say, I don't spend a lot of time with her. The food was good, and beat the heck out of cooking. I was only able to eat half of what was on my plate, but I'm pleasantly full, pleasantly tired, and ready to kick back for my weekend. I'll update you on the $17 chicken soup when I make it tomorrow or Monday.
Wishing you all a restful, successful weekend, buddies!

When I was visiting Hmong families, I was gifted with a chicken. I purchased 7 more. I was taught how to kill them by slicing their carotids and bleeding them to death. Then I learned how to feather and gut them. They were exactly like the chicken you describe. I stewed them. They were delicious.

Better you than me with that chicken! Sounds like the rest of the day was good so now onto Happy Sunday! Enjoy the day off.

@Lady, they must have bled this one the same way...even the feet are very pale! It must be very young, too, because there is none of the yellow, crusty skin on the feet. The gizzard, however, is a very bright red...not the brown you find in packaged gizzards. I'm looking forward to working with it! Any tips on gutting?

Eeewwa! LOL! Don't eat it, then again for $17, I'd stew, fry and fry again that thing! LMAO! lol

Good luck with your chicken after paying all that for it!

Sounds like a 'real' chicken to me. Free range and raised for quality meat, not just water-filled. Removing the guts shouldn't be too difficult. Probably just a question of snipping away from the carcass if they've removed all the objectionable bits. If I were you, I'd try jointing it (not difficult to do, lots of videos on YouTube if you've never done it before) or cooking it whole in a poulet au pot style. It would be a shame to turn that chicken just into very expensive soup! Another option would be to ask the guys at the nail salon. They'd probably know what to do with it.

I agree with Snoop - it sounds like a very expensive chicken soup when for the want of viewing a couple of YouTube videos, you could have the offal/giblets out to make stock and joint it to enjoy the meat at its best. The cats would enjoy the giblets as a treat too 😸😸. Your neighbour sounds like she could be hard work but the meal sounds good. The sort of person who could win £10m in the lottery and complain because it wasn't £20m!! Have a great Sunday!

Oh my, if I had to "take care" of food like this I would probably starve! Hey wait a minute, have I just stumbled on a way to lose my dang last 7 lbs! 🤔

When I was a kid, my dad was a field rep for a congressman in LA. The district had a Chinese neighborhood. My dad helped a lot of the folks there with immigration issues, so they would deliver food to our house including whole ducks - roasted with head, feet and all. I don't remember eating it, just being weirded out. I do however remember the most amazing mile-high strawberry shortcakes and bottles of 7Up (considered good luck). Hope you soup is delicious, Kes! The $17 bought you a culinary adventure!

I just stuck my hand up in there, grabbed a handful, and pulled!

Grandma would grasp the chickens by the head and give them a flip, they would be jumping around in the yard with their head still in her grasp. Dip them in scalding water so you can get the feathers off, out with the innards and into the skillet. Can't get any fresher than that. She never cooked the feet, but lots of people did back then. She wouldn't eat chicken, she said it tasted like wet feathers smelled. Guess she had dressed too many of them. Ruined it for her.
