mskestrela's Journal, 18 Nov 16

Oy, what a day! I hurt almost everywhere..but mostly my back and feet.
I'm exhausted, to the point of barely remembering the drive home.
But mostly, I'm confused and saddened at what I think is losing a good client.
This lady had been with me, off and on, for about 7 years. Today, I did an amazing job on color, highlights and a cut. She was almost asleep through all of it.....she's dealing with a progressively disabled husband, so that's not unusual. (Have I mentioned that the majority of the clients at my salon are from Sun City, a retirement community?)
So, after an hour and a half of being with her, she's checking out, and she says, "I have something I need to talk to you about." She then pulls out a credit card statement from last month, shows me a *highlighted* line for a charge with me on Oct. 22. I use a credit card processing service that runs from my phone, and is ultra-secure. So, I check my online scheduling service, and sure enough, find that she was in on Oct. 20. I ask what the problem is, and she tells me that she hasn't been in since the end of September. "I keep a calendar, and the appointment wasn't on it, so this wasn't me."
I explain that I don't have access to her card number unless I have it physically, and it's in her sight at all times. She insists that even though I had her appointment and her charge on record, that she hasn't been in since September. I explain again that I can't have charged her card without her physical presence, and she insists that it wasn't her.
Dementia? Short-term memory loss? Evil intent? I don't know, but she wrote a check for today's service, (no tip) in spite of the fact that she was elated with the results, and leaves. I suspect that she will (or has) put a stop payment on the check. And that she won't be back.
She accused me of STEALING , y'all! This is a very upsetting turn of events, and after the tiring day, not what I need.
I'm very glad I'm not a stress eater. To the contrary, I'm a stress faster. Appetite is nil, wanting food is nil. All I want to do is drink myself into oblivion, and curl up in a little ball. Some days, I just hate people.
Neighbors' dogs are fed and in for the night, cats are fed and cuddled, and first rum-n-coke is in the belly. The night is shaping up.
Thanks for letting me vent. Wishing you all a better tomorrow.
~Kes

If she stops the payment on her check after you have already completed her appointment then she is the one who is the thief!

She almost certainly has dementia, especially as you showed her the evidence in black and white and explained about how you couldn't charge her card without her being there. Very sad - both for you and the lady 🙁

Oh Kes, that's awful. Being accused of anything when you haven't done it is bad but of stealing, it's a real shock to the system. Put it out of your mind as I can't imagine she's done it maliciously and it's probably some age related memory thing. I know it leaves you out of pocket if she cancels the cheque which isn't fair but what can you do? Take it to some sort of arbitration? And how much would that cost? Anyway, big hug coming your way x

Thanks, Ladies. I do hope she remembers that she did come in last month. If it does come down to arbitration, at least my card processing app shows the entry method. If it shows the card was swiped, and not manually entered, then there can be no fraud. And it DOES show that it was swiped.
