Happy weekend, Buddies! It's been a busy day for this little bird. My friend, Lisa, and I finally were able to coordinate to make it to the shabu-shabu restaurant in Savannah for lunch today. Shabu-shabu is a Japanese hot pot dish, where you cook your own meal at the table. You order your kind of broth, protein, and noodles (if you eat them), and an assortment of veggies and mushrooms is included. Then they bring the raw ingredients to the table. The table has a cook top embedded in it, to keep the broth simmering. (I know, some of you insist that if you go to a restaurant, you expect the food to be cooked for you...LOL!). The meats are sliced paper-thin, frozen, and it literally takes 30 seconds of swishing the slices in the broth to cook them. So you load up the veggies to cook in the broth, and make a wonderful soup with them. Transfer the veggies and some stock to your bowl, then start swishing your meats to eat with it. Shabu is Japanese for swish, or the sound that it makes as it whooshes through the broth. By the time you say shabu shabu slowly, the meat is cooked.
Amazingly filling and supremely healthy food! I'm amazed that I'm absolutely stuffed, and my calories for the day are at 459.
On another note, John (the mystery man) came to the salon to have me cut his hair this morning. He says I'm the best barber he knows. :P I told him he can pay me with another lunch, and he said just to let him know where and when. There was much hugging. We will see.
After lunch, I braved the crowds at the Super WalMart nearby to stock up on the weekly necessities, as well as investigating the local Goodwill. Feh. My local one is better.
Tomorrow is going to be busy at work, and I'm taking care of the neighbors' 3 dogs for the weekend while they're out slogging through mud in their ATVs.
Have a great weekend!

Uh Shabu Shabu! I like that one lunch I had downtown LA. It was really good! The waiter was laughing at me, because I had no clue.

@Warren, it's a learning curve. The dipping sauces, the cooking technique, the timing....a minefield! But, unlike many learning curves, it's delicious! ;)

I will try again on the 22nd, hopefully, when I see the doctor again.

I had trouble trying to figure out how long to cook the meat, and the veggies were unique. You talked me into it, again.

Well, that sounds like a pretty friendly hair cut! :-)

@Warren, the folks at this restaurant are very helpful in giving instructions. Not only with the timing, but with building and layering the dips. I love the Japanese aesthetic of beauty, texture, appearance and flavor. If where you go doesn't emphasize those elements, I'd advise finding a different venue. Ultimately, just remember that saying shabu shabu slowly is the cooking time for the meats. For the veggies, it comes down to a matter of personal taste.
