Looking at the step ladder for scale, that's a pretty big house they're having!

The coop itself is 4x6 the run is approx. 8x8 including under the coop and it is about 6 feet tall. I can feel I think every muscle in my body so it has been a good workout this week. I have to head out early to get the rest of the supplies for the roof and some misc. parts and pieces to finish. I'll be so happy to get it completed and the chicks moved. I'll take some chick photos when they are out of their box. They really need more space.

What breed of chicks? Anybody else remember when the postman/woman delivered boxes of chicks?

Please do, I am anxious to see. You are making me think, why not? This is something I can think upon:)

@2227Gwen check your local city and county ordinances, some do not allow homeowners to have "livestock" and some specifically make exceptions for chickens, goats and rabbits. 🙋🏻

Smprowett, definitely if you are thinking chickens check your codes in your area. Mine allows 6 hens, no roosters, specific minimum distances from neighboring homes. I had to change my location plan because it was a little too close to a neighbor's. She wouldn't care but being almost 90 in not good health whoever buys the house eventually might care. There are also requirements for upkeep etc. Some areas require a permit. If you have a homeowner's association that also may have additional regulations. I wouldn't even look at a house when I was house shopping with an association, not good luck with them in the past. Didn't want the hassle with neighborhood politics. Here is a site (free membership) with tons of information and lots of helpful people. www.backyardchickens.com I have become addicted to this site learning about chickens and it has been amazing help in this building process. These eggs will be expensive for awhile as this coop has cost me more than planned. ;)

WFN, you could offset some of the costs by installing a hammock and renting it out on AirBnB. ;-)

So lucky! I'd love to have chickens but I live in a condo with no yard. Have fun! :-)

Thanks for the info....my town livestock...goats, chickens, cattle, horses, etc. We are a tiny, tiny farm community. Besides, I back up to 1000 acres of cotton. Definitely country here....that's why I am so I inspired!

T8u9, 3 Easter Eggers, 1 barred Rock, and one Austraulrop. Mine were delivered to the post office, they call you whenever they get there, even if it is 3 am. They have a special pick up door for live animals if it is early.

Gwen, just an FyI give yourself time to build a secure coop and run. Me I'm pushing it and myself with chicks needing to move to a bigger space. You can order chicks most times of the year from several sources depending on how many you want to order. Check out backyard chickens, it is amazing.

Funny about the AirB&B as spaces here are going for big bucks here in KC this week with 100% solar eclipse on Monday.

We've got 16 layers, everything from silkies and americaunas to barred rock, silver laced wyandottes, buff orpingtons, a salmon favorelle and some speckled sussex. Our roo is a lavender silkie named...Prince! (The hens are 'The Revolution'!!). Having hens is lots and lots of fun!

Oh my catinhat you have quite a flock! and quite an assortment of pretty birds. You must be in the country to be able to have a roo. I think my Easter Eggers are going to be the friendliest and the Austraulorp the most skittish. I haven't spent a lot of attention time with them since the first couple weeks. Today will be painting and getting the coop secured with doors, windows and of course the roof.

We are in the country, on a small acreage (5 acres). My friend has a coop similar to yours - she and I built it - for her birds in town. She has americaunas, speckled sussex and some bantam breeds. Chickens are so much fun! I hope you enjoy yours. :)

Catinhat, so good of you to help build her coop. I thought about Sussex but stopped @ ordering 4 chicks they tossed in a couple extra. One didn't make it. T8U9 the postman/woman doesn't deliver them anymore in most areas you have to pick them up at the post office. They call you when they come in even if it's @ 3am. Here you can pick them up before the post office opens if you go to the right door and ring the bell.
