mskestrela's Journal, 11 May 17

I'm sitting here just before 8 AM, and heard a huge *THUMP* outside..possibly on the roof. I was just about to get up to investigate, when I saw a huge turkey vulture soar off the roof and into my yard. Soon, the woods behind my house was filled with more of them, with a couple of them landing on the shed. They're quite common in this area, but they usually stay away from houses. Yesterday, I had seen one in my neighbors' dog yard, so I texted her, and she said yeah, she saw them earlier. They were wading in the doggie pool! LOL It was so hot and dry, I guess they needed to cool off, too.
I saw a hummer at the feeder, but after just a couple of beak dips, he backed away and looked at it in disgust, and flew off. I had wondered, after last week when the feeder emptied so quickly, why it hadn't moved since I refilled it. I thought maybe I got the mix wrong...
So, since I got a new feeder yesterday (with a perch, this time), I made up a new mix in it, and took it out to replace the old one. When I took the old one down, I realized that the reservoir under the 'flowers' was full of air! I guess I flipped it over too fast, and trapped air under the bottle, so the nectar didn't fill it. No wonder the poor guy looked disgusted!
I spent almost $180 at Walmart yesterday, and the majority of it was cat food and supplies and bird food and supplies. LOL! I did get a 10 lb bag of chicken leg quarters at .69/lb. So part of my day today will be breaking them down and vacuum sealing them into individual portions for the freezer. I usually remove the drumsticks, separate the thighs from the hips, and bone them out into filets, then boil up the backs and thigh bones for broth.
When I was bringing the groceries in, I somehow managed to scrape a patch of skin off my arm. I didn't realize it until I saw blood running down my wrist! I ran some cold water over it, and boy, did that sting! But it stopped the bleeding, and I got some NeoSporin on it, and covered it with a band-aid.
We're expecting record-breaking high temperatures in Coastal South Carolina today..upper 90's. Whew!
I've got a long to-do list today, so I'm off to get some stuff done.
Happy Thursday, Buddies!

Misty, a few years ago, I would have gladly swapped! But the longer I live here, the thinner my blood gets, and cold weather makes me want to sleep. The temperatures we're having this week are way out of the ordinary for this time of year..more like August than May! But, there's a front moving in tomorrow night that will cool things off for the weekend.

@Misty, the snorkeling isn't great around here. The water tends to be pretty murky, and there are no reefs to speak of. Of course, I'm biased, because I've snorkeled and scubaed off Honduras and the Galapagos... LOL! But the beaches are nice, the folks are friendly, and there's plenty to do.
