I have a question for my FatSecret buddies! So I'm trying to lose about 11-12 lbs, get down to 135lbs, but also NEED to reduce the body fat, which currently is around 37%. So, FatSecret suggests I have about 1500 cals a day, but looking at my history I think that's too high to really lose weight - or am I wrong? I'm contemplating trying for 1300 cals daily for the next week (on my staycation), measuring food & all that. But I got to thinking, maybe I'm going about this wrong. MAYBE I need to work less on weight and more on the body fat. I don't belong to a gym, just have a few dumbells at the house to do any kind of strength training with. Naturally, I do lots of cardio, running & elliptical & such. As much cardio as I do, you'd think I'd have already lost weight. Well, of course some would say I need less cardio & more weight training, especially to lose the body fat. And I also know if I should lose, say, 10 lbs, that at least some of that weight will be muscle no matter what! So I'm wondering, do I lose the weight & THEN build muscle, or should I build the muscle first? Any thoughts?

Most programs for building muscle start with bulking/lifting phase for several weeks followed by a cutting phase with reduced calories. Building muscles on a caloric deficit is difficult. Steady state cardio breaks down muscles to convert them to energy - probably why your body fat % is high. If you are 37% body fat at 135 lbs - then you'd have 50 lbs of body fat. How did you come up with your body fat %?

When you speak of gaining muscle are you talking about lean muscle or bulk? Hard core weight training would build bulk and reduce body fat. But I have increased body muscle by using only 3 pound weights, resistance training with bands and Pilates reformer and using an exercise bike and treadmill. Not any gym work to it. So clarify for yourself what your goal is to consider the direction. My thoughts are your weight is not health threatening right now, right? So focusing on muscle building might be a good thing. I also wonder how you came up with your body fat measure of 37%. Remember that muscle building takes time and regular activity and you don't see results quickly. Weight loss can happen more quickly if you have a committed plan. So if you are a results oriented person maybe a few pounds off would be a good start. Also maybe go with the 1300, as I too experienced that FS suggested intake was kind of high and reduced it for success. Remember you can always change your mind, modify direction and consider options so what you do is not written in stone.

^^^ that, both of their suggestions. I'd always say building muscle is #1 as it is the engine for your body. A Cadillac muscle car is healthy and burns a lot of fuel. A Volkswagen has small engine and burns little fuel.

Thank you for your comments. To answer your questions about the body fat%, I have one of those hand-held devices where you enter your age, height, weight & gender, and it sends a signal through your arms. The body fat could be higher, since I am female and tend to carry more fat in the hips & thighs. No, I don't want to be a "bulky" weightlifter, but again I'm a 56 yr old female so I don't think that's really possible anyway, just want to build up some muscle for strength & metabolism. I suppose that would be "lean" muscle. It's good to know that I don't have to join a gym to do it, not that I'm opposed but it's a money thing right now.
