Debbie Cousins's Journal, 12 May 22

Things went well yesterday. I got in ONE GALLON of water, which is recommended to do before giving plasma. My calories were over where I would like them to be, but "it was my husband's fault," lol. He wanted a Dairy Queen milkshake and I was just going to order 3 chicken strips. Well, they had a "deal" where you get the three strips, fries, drink and a small sundae and he talked me into getting that. On the bright side, I gave him all of the fries (except two little crunchy ones), he ate one of the chicken tenders (I didn't have any sauce), I poured out all but about 4oz of the Diet Coke. I DID take that small chocolate sundae and make it into a German Chocolate blizzard by stirring it up with some coconut and pecans in it. It was very good, but I could have done without it.

We went to the plasma center yesterday morning to try to become new donors. Both of us had a medication on our list that raised red flags. Mine was the Meloxicam. They asked me what it was for, and I said arthritis. They wanted to know what kind of arthritis (rheumatoid, psoriatic or osteoarthritis). I told them I THOUGHT it was osteo but I wasn't sure. Turns out that if you have rheumatoid or psoriatic you cannot be a donor. I called my doctor and he said it WAS osteo. They gave me a letter to take to him for signature confirming that, which I took by his office and dropped off. It's ready and I can pick it up when they open at 8am, PTL. SO, I'll be able to actually donate the plasma when I take them the letter this morning, assuming all my vitals are good, my iron levels are high enough and I am well enough hydrated. With my husband, it was his Metformin and Metropopol. They said he has to QUIT the latter and get a letter saying that he is only borderline diabetic. Lots of hoops to jump through, but I understand how they have to be extra diligent to ensure that people are getting a quality blood product.

In total, I'm sure I drank less than ONE liter of Diet Coke yesterday (Thursday). Usually I drink more than one TWO-liter. I'm also supposed to get plenty of protein, especially before I donate. Going to make an egg & cheese omelet to eat before I go.

I'm going to drink 4-6 8-oz bottles of water before the procedure. Hopefully, they'll be able to get a good vein - typically I am a "hard stick" and often when I go to the hematologist more than one person has to attempt the draw. But, usually, I have ZERO water in my system. Praying that my body hangs onto all the water I drank yesterday and that I will drink "this morning" (Friday). My day designations will seem off because I went to bed at 5pm TH and got up at 9PM. To me, it is the middle of the night TH or very early morning on FRI.

OK, going to try to do some more "productive" things while I am up, and get start3ed on drinking on "tomorrow's" water. Wish me luck with the plasmapheresis! I'm a little nervous about it. I'm praying I will get the best person to draw my blood so that they only have to stick me once to get a really good vein that won't give out (as usually happens).

Oh, BIGGIE . . . yesterday I went to the grocery store and Publix had "Buy Two Get Two Free" on 2-liter Diet Cokes, and I didn't buy any because I don't know how much of it I will be drinking from now on. I'm still not to the point where I feel like I will be giving it up forever; but I will at least have to NOT drink it the day before and the morning of my plasma donations.

k, off to accomplish a few more things before I go back to bed for a few more hours.
