heidij123's Journal, 09 Jan 17

It's been an interesting week food-wise, not all good from a calorie-control point of view, but I learned a few things.

1) Chinese set menus are very high in calories. Fried rice is especially scary, and I'd rather have boiled rice anyway, so will ask for that next time. It was a real blow-out meal. Glad we did it, but probably once or twice a year will be enough.

2) I know this obvious, but while having occasional treats is okay, it is best not to have several in one day!

3) When adding in new foodstuffs, it would best to check the calorie effects on a meal before eating. I made a nice dinner which included potatoes and canellini beans and bacon bits, all things I haven't eaten for a long time, and it was nice, but put me over on calories. All good things to use, but maybe not all at once - or at least I need to be aware of the likely effect.

4) Treats. Hmm. Need to either eat them at the end of the day after adding up calories, or log them before I eat dinner and make sure dinner doesn't put me over. Sometimes treats can be planned in, and sometimes they just happen, but they still have to be counted in. I want to enjoy them without feeling guilty.

5) I'm glad I am still counting calories. It helps me to feel in control, especially when weight is jumping around. I know what I have eaten, and therefore know not to panic about gains that are mostly just water.

I'm happy overall with how I'm doing, so am continuing with my plan this week, just a little wiser now 😀

Well you have stayed the same Heidi so that is great. Like you say you happy with what you are doing and also a bit wiser. I think that i would still calorie count too as a safety net.

I think 3) is especially true. I'm a fan or Rachel Roddy who is an ex-pat living in Rome. She writes beautifully and gives her take on Roman recipes which always tempt me but some, in the true Italian way, are double or even triple carb-ing (potatoes, pasta and beans in the same stew, anyone?) https://www.theguardian.com/profile/rachel-roddy

Well done for maintaining this week 😊

Always good to be learning and getting wiser about food, like you are Heidi. Great reminders here about eating mindfully. And love the term "triple-carbing", Phooka!

Congrats on maintaining. It has to be a learning experience. I have been planning in a treat or adding it at the end of the day if I have room left over. Calorie counting does help with this. Less deprivation. More carbs, though. LOL!

The weight I posted is a kind of average for last week. My real weight is all over the place, and I'm not happy posting just what I see on the scales on a particular day. Last week started at 142.2, was 142 for several days, jumped up to 144.4 after the massive Chinese meal, and this morning was down to 141.3. So I'm 'taking a view' on it. I'll post new weights generally when I feel I have something worth recording, for whatever reason. I'll also post weights on Mondays, because those are challenge reporting days from me, but that will probably just be a repeat of the last weight I posted. I'm looking for a meaningful way of posting weight, basically, ignoring all the daily up and downs, and hoping to show a trend over time 🤔 Also, I'm not bothered about increments less than half a pound, so there probably will be a lot of 'same weights' recorded.

I know what you mean about weight, i don't bother with recording anything less than half a pound either. Your weight will even out and you will find a way to record which suits you.

Thanks, Debbie, I hope so. I use a spreadsheet for recording daily weight and input/output stats. I just added a calculation for a rolling fortnightly average weight which might help. I'm sure all will become clear over time 😀

Heidi, great to hear how you go about posting and dealing with the fluctuations. Thanks so much for being so open - it helps others with same topics. I think I'll find myself doing the same re doing a read on the crazy numbers.

I think I had a wild fluctuation this week and it is crazy. Being extra careful this week as the wasabi peanuts got the better of me last week - even the cat had a lick they were that good! You've done so well I think you've earned the right to log what the hell you want to :) :) :)
