heidij123's Journal, 14 Dec 15

I think I had the most unhealthy dinner ever last night. Six chocolates (at least I counted, and didn't eat the whole bowlful that was placed by my side), three glasses of wine, a packet of crisps (potato chips), two mince pies, a hefty dollop of Greek yogurt (not in my plan!), and three slices of canned pineapple (my token health-food). That was my dinner, not as well as dinner. Fortunately I did a walk earlier in the day, so calories were about break-even.

I have two lunches out this week. Hope I will have worked them off by the end of the week. I am trying to add in some more exercise sessions, as I haven't been doing as much as I would like lately.

Did some reading about different forms of exercise and fat-burning. It seems that, although some forms of exercise burn more fat than others, in reality it is the total calories burned that is important. Your body burns carbs, fat or a mixture of both. If you burn carbs while exercising, your body will break down fat into carbs afterwards to replace the carbs burned. So you lose fat anyway.

Also regarding how much fat you can lose each week without losing muscle as well. They usually say 1-2 lbs per week. In fact it's actually about 1% of body weight. So if you weighed 150 lbs you can safely lose 1.5 lbs, or if you're 300 lbs, then 3 lbs per week. Interesting to know!

Heidi -- Your food 'crime' is a misdemeanor compared to my felonies earlier in the week; so I think, then, you won't be serving much 'time' to atone for it! ;) Interesting tidbits -- I haven't done any intense or focused 'studying' on the topic, but I have Googled "best ways to burn fat" on a couple of occasions for some cursory perusing -- usually just some 'endorsed' or 'purchasable' diet plan and/or exercise plan come up among the top links . . . thanks for sharing!

I believe the important factor is calories in vs. calories out. If you are only doing low to moderate intensity activities your body only needs about 120 g of carbs(glucose) if you are not on a ketogenic diet. The remaining carbs will be stored as muscle glycogen which is burned during high intensity activities. If your muscle stores get filled and excess carbs will go to fat storage. Once converted to fat there isn't a pathway for fat to convert back to carbs, it's a one way trip. However, the glycerol backbone of body fat which is left from fat metabolism can be converted to glucose in the liver. The other sources of glucose production in the body are lactate and certain amino acids. If there isn't enough glucose in the body the liver will produce ketones from fat and certain amino acids for fuel. the body is constantly switching fuels based on what is supplied in the diet. You can get back on track, just remember moderation and watch the total calories. Good luck.

I do little or no exercise. Certainly not enough to burn up fat. I just keep my calorie input below my calorie output. I'd Like to be fit enough to exercise. Maybe once I lose a few more stone.

I never knew the titbit about how much fat you can lose without losing muscle - thank you for sharing. Chocolate is good for you - especially dark chocolate!

Heidi, I'm envious that you are able to gain very little weight and still eat as many meals out as you do.

I know I can believe anything you tell me and I appreciate the new information! It means I'm doing exactly what I should be doing. Don't beat yourself up Heidi...its the holidays and all of us are having one of those moments...difference about us now is we recognize it, and work harder to correct it! Proud of you :D

@losinit, I must look up your felonies!! ... @CatHerder, thanks for the detailed information! ... @JockoT, a few months ago, I was too unfit to do much. I still only walk. I started with 15 minute walks, can note do 1.5 hours comfortably. Hope you will soon feel able to do something! ... @glen, well, it was kind of planned naughtiness, all very consciously done. Is that okay? Maybe it is! ... @Claire, I knew I should be eating more chocolate 😉 ... @Scalewatcher, that's the beauty of 5:2! Plus which I am a little bit careful about what I choose, well, sometimes I am! ... @Spiritspell, I'm glad you're happy with what you are doing. It is that time of year, isn't it? I think I'm happy to indulge a little at the moment. Just trying to keep it within some kind of limits, and make adjustments so that it hopefully won't do to much damage 😀

If it helps I have been told that wine with a meal does not have to be counted, only if drunk on its own!! :)

Deborah, noooo, that doesn't help!! That's like a licence to drink! I got through a bottle on Friday night, the first time I've drunk that much in ages. Never mind about calories, it just plain isn't healthy! PS do chocolates count as a meal? Ha ha ha ha ha!

Darkazana. I would think I would file that one with, "If you buy a cream bun from the bakers and there are no calories marked on the box then it means it has none."!

Very funny, Jocko! I'll drink to that!
