heidij123's Journal, 25 Oct 15

Doing weight a day early as I'm going out for lunch today, and expecting a load of water weight added tomorrow, which isn't really representative. Also I won't have much time tomorrow morning to do this, as we have a meeting to go to.

Happy with eating this week. Had one lovely meal out with friends, went over on calories, but happy with that, and expect to go a little over again today. Made up for it on other days, and also ate a couple of salads this week, as per my last journal in UK, so also pleased that I've done that.

Definitely intend to restart 5:2 this week! Need to plan what I'm going to eat on those days in order to make it happen!

Also have made a start on exercising again, and did a couple of longer walks towards the end of the week, which I really enjoyed. The countryside here is really pretty, with stupendous views of surrounding mountains. Haven't done any cycling yet, as have had various aches and pains that have put me off. Maybe this week? Not pushing it, as I want to enjoy it! But I will start that soon.

Mike asked me yesterday, was I loving being back here, and I said no. He said neither was he. I think it's because the weather hasn't been great, a bit cool and cloudy and unsettled, and for me, I've been doing a lot of little jobs around the house which have taken up all my energy. Wednesday was a great day, though. Went to my first guitar group practice as a bass player, feeling nervous, and was surprised that I thoroughly enjoyed it! And then the meal out was lovely, food and company. I also enjoyed yesterday evening, because I cooked a nice dinner, and Mike lit the wood-burner, so we were really cosy 😀 and we watched Strictly Come Dancing, which was fun!

Well done! You're doing really well! The little aches and pains could just be because of your long journey and all the unpacking and cleaning etc.

Glen. You live a charmed life. I'll wait until the sun scrapes the frost off my car windows.

NM, I wouldn't want your cold. I "escaped" Wisconsin in 1969 never to go back in the winter 20 below for days on end is not in my plans. I love the area around Lacross and the northern lakes regions but never ever again will I spend a winter that far north. A destination is an Alaskan cruise in the summer. LOL I would love to see Alaska on the ground as well, only in the summer.

Heidi, would love to go back to Europe including Spain. I didn't get to Spain in 1972 but did visit London. I was fresh out of college so my perspective on what I would want to do is different now. I would love to go to Stonehenge, Wales and Ireland in the UK and sample lots of foods. Not just London even though I loved the old city and the history.

Hope your aches and pains are fading, the walks sound beautiful . Are there still problems among the local expat community? I remember you mentioning that you were not looking forward to going to Spain because some of your friends had been arguing and you did not want to take sides? Maybe that is affecting how you feel about the place. Good luck with 5:2 diet, I am sure that you will have as much success with it as you did in England.

Claire, that is all still going on, and I think you're right, it is affecting us. But in a way it's also been good to get back here and talk to some of our friends about it. It's farcical in a way, though, people are going to be asked to give a 'verdict' on who is right and wrong without really understanding the issues, so they will simply be voting for whichever bunch of people they like better!

LACH, you're right it is all due to the journey and unpacking, and all the cleaning and suchlike. Also my guitar is heavy, and I haven't been lifting it for weeks, and then used it lot! Looking forward to an easier week this week, and also a visit from my physio, who will no doubt give me a good going over. It's going to hurt, but still do me a lot of good!

Glen, it sounds like you have nice temperatures there at the moment. Not so warm here, but having the fire going last night was a real treat! NM, I wouldn't want to live where you live!

Jeri, I hope you make it over to Europe. There are lots of nice parts of the UK and Ireland, and Spain too. France is lovely, Italy too. There are great places to see wherever you go. Make it as long a trip as you can! And make sure you look us up!

@Heidij I envy the freedom you and Mike have to live where you want and stay for as long you want to be there. I would like for your winter vacation to be everything y'all want it to be. At least you have your music to keep you happy.

I also envy that. I would love to travel the US and then back to Europe. I cannot do that on my limited budget. Would have to find a financially stable man in my life to do so or win the lottery. (would help to buy a ticket here and there). Trying my best to get to Atlanta in the spring.

My high today is 86 degrees! One day last week it dropped to 69 because we had huge thunderstorms all day. Temps won't drop into winter until at least mid-November! I wish we could just swap places by thinking it! :D

@Scalewatcher, it's not a vacation really. We work hard here! Being in England always feels more like a vacation.

Excuse me, I thought Spain was just fun and games... food, wine,& guitars. Heidi, please explain to me your version of the word work.

Thanks, Jo, and it was nice to see Strictly. First one this season. We used to do a bit of ballroom and Latin years ago, so we do enjoy watching the better dancers 😀

@Scalewatcher, I guess work = responsibilities, things you have to do whether you like it or not! Been getting cinema accounts up to date (boo, I hate doing accounts!), cleaning the house, going through old clothes, getting the fridge/pantry stocked, and learning new songs on a new instrument, it's hard! Will be fun in the end. Also seeing friends and eating out, which is not work, lol! I'm tired!

You are busy, but I like to think of you having fun hanging out with other talented musicians with nimble fingers. I have a movie suggestion for you. This afternoon I saw "Bridge of Spies," starring my favorite actor, Tom Hanks. Excellent film.

Heidi, so sorry you are in the middle of a battle between people, that is never a good place. I spent 6 weeks in various parts of Europe back in 1972 have always wanted to go back but never in the budget. I loved London and wanted to stay in Paris (even though others said people would Paris be cold to Americans I had a blast) Italy of course was amazing all the ancient culture. No chance to get to Spain as in our plans too many full trains heading toward the running of the bulls the Munich Olympics affected our plans so we chose other routes. We had Eurrail passes so loosely followed our plans. Thanks for the invite Hope to see you in Atlanta if you an make it.
